Learners Share Concerns That AI Is Undermining Their Study Capabilities, Investigation Finds
According to latest research, students are expressing concerns that using AI is weakening their ability to study. A significant number complain it renders schoolwork “overly simple”, while some claim it restricts their innovative capacity and impedes them from developing new skills.
Broad Use of Artificial Intelligence By Students
A report looking at the use of AI in UK educational institutions found that only 2% of learners between the ages of 13 and 18 said they did not use AI for their academic tasks, while the vast majority said they consistently utilized it.
Adverse Impact on Abilities
In spite of AI’s popularity, 62% of the pupils reported it has had a negative impact on their abilities and development at school. A quarter of the respondents concurred that AI “facilitates accessing solutions without independent work”.
Another 12% reported artificial intelligence “restricts my imaginative processes”, while equivalent percentages reported they were less inclined to solve problems or produce innovative text.

A specialist in AI technology commented that the investigation was among the first to examine how students in the UK were using AI into their education.

The specialist added: “Youth utilizing AI demonstrate a highly refined and adult-like awareness of its educational implications, underscoring how their independent technological adoption in schooling contexts is frequently underestimated.”
Empirical Analyses and Wider Concerns
These results are consistent with empirical analyses on the use of artificial intelligence in learning. A particular research assessed brain electrical activity while essay writing among learners using advanced AI systems and determined: “These findings provoke anxiety about the future scholastic effects of AI dependence and stress the importance of more extensive investigation into its learning functions.”
Roughly half of the numerous respondents polled said they were concerned their fellow students were “secretly using AI” for academic work without their instructors being able to detect it.
Desire for Instruction and Constructive Aspects

Only 31% said they didn’t think utilizing AI had a negative impact on any of their competencies. However, most of pupils stated using AI assisted them acquire fresh abilities, such as 18% who indicated it aided them comprehend challenges, and 15% who said it assisted them generate “new and better” concepts.

When requested to expand, one 15-year-old female student commented: “I have been able to understand maths better and it helps me to solve difficult questions.”
