Caelan Doris Included in Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby squad announcement update

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall internationals, however lock McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the first Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Ulster forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are also absent due to injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation following the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped player in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities states uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous encounter, the team host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with the coach deciding not to calling up the province's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The front rower has been in a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Munster second row Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and veteran Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for Doris if the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to the US on the following day.
