An Kindness of Strangers: The Way a Man I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Role That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I set out on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was exploring starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I shared that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an research lab at the university – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his identity, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a position in Switzerland where I got to know my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
